Eastern Carver County students increase proficiency levels across district
Board presentation including complete 2010 results Results of the 2010 Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) show Eastern Carver County students continue to outperform their peers across Minnesota in achieving proficiency in reading and math. The MCAs assess proficiency on the state's high academic standards. The Eastern Carver County Schools increased the percentage of students scoring at "proficient" or higher at nearly every level tested. The graphic below compares the percentage of District students identified as 'proficient' in math and reading compared to the state results overall. ![]() "We are particularly pleased that the percentage of students showing proficiency in math and reading increased in many grade levels," said Cathy Gallagher, Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction. "There were significant gains in 3rd grade math, 5th grade reading and 6th grade math. For example, last year, 83.7 percent of 5th graders were proficient; this year the figure grew to 90 percent." While the results show many areas of improvement in already strong test scores, Ms. Gallagher pointed to one notable exception: the 11th grade math proficiency score at Chaska High which came in at the state average. "None of our predictors led us to expect such a significant difference between our two high schools in this year's math score. We will examine the results closely, looking for patterns. Then we'll adjust and monitor math instruction and support in the coming year," she said. The results in grades 7-12 are difficult to compare to prior years scores due to the opening of Chanhassen High and the creation of a third middle school in Pioneer Ridge. "None of our secondary schools have the same populations this year due to the boundary changes associated with the high schools and middle schools," said Nancy Thul, Secondary Curriculum Coordinator. "This first year's results will become our baseline. We'll have a better opportunity for comparisons next year." GRAD results show most students on track for graduation The state requirements for earning a diploma are tested through the MCAs each year. Students must pass GRAD tests in reading and math that are embedded within the MCAs as well as a stand-alone writing exam in 9th grade. The chart below shows the percentage of district students meeting the state requirements as of 2010. ![]() "It is important to remember that the results of the MCAs are only one measure of achievement," Ms. Gallagher said. "We measure student growth in multiple ways throughout a school year. Complete testing information will be shared with the School Board at its regular meeting in July." | ||||||||||||||
